The Australian Studies in China Book Prizes have been awarded biennially since 2004, traditionally at the conference of the Chinese Association for Australian Studies (CAAS). The prizes are awarded to recognise and encourage the efforts of researchers, writers and translators working in the field of Australian Studies in China. It is proposed that in 2024 three prizes of AUD$1,200 each will be awarded for the best books published on Australian Studies topics. The prizes are to be in three categories:

  1. one prize for original work in Chinese
  2. one prize for original work in English
  3. one prize for a translation work (from English to Chinese)

New category introduction

In line with FASIC's program committee recommendations, it is proposed to introduce one new category to the 2024 Book Prizes:

  1. two prizes for Emerging Scholars in Australian Studies. This is a category dedicated to best essays, articles, and papers authored by PhD students and early career researchers, recognising and encouraging their scholarly works exploring issues relevant to Australian society, history or culture and topics relevant to the Australian-China relationship. The Selection Committee will review and select two category winners, with each recipient awarded $500.

Eligibility Criteria for Original Work in Chinese, Original Work in English &Translation Work

To be eligible for a prize, the author or at least one of the joint authors of the work must be a Chinese citizen working in the Chinese university system or equivalent institutions in China. The Selection Committee may choose not to award a prize if no suitable books are submitted in a particular category. For the first three categories, the publication date of a nominated work must fall between 2 September 2022 and 30 June 2024.

If a nominated book is due for publication after the submission date, we ask the applicant to confirm the publisher and the expected date of publication on the nomination form.

The Selection Committee will consider original writings and translations on subjects relating to Australia, including Australian culture, arts, media, economy, politics, history, science, technology, law, education, social sciences and Australia-China relations and relationships. Individual or joint authors, translators, editors, publishers and Australian Studies Centres can make nominations for these prizes on behalf of the author(s) or translator(s).

Eligibility Criteria for the Emerging Scholars in Australian Studies Prize

Candidates must be Chinese citizens either completing their doctoral degree in 2024 or having received their doctoral degree no earlier than 1 January 2018.

Eligible candidates may be affiliated with universities in Greater China or, as specifically intended for Chinese students pursuing their PhDs in Australia, may also be affiliated with Australian universities.

The paper must be endorsed by at least one supervisor or published in a recognised academic journal.

Submissions can be in English or Chinese. Please note that for entries submitted in Chinese, an English translation must accompany the original text to facilitate comprehensive evaluation by the judging panel.

The Selection Committee may choose not to award a prize if no suitable essays/articles/papers are presented in this category.
